The 37th President of the United States who became the first President to resign from office in the aftermath of the Watergate Scandal in 1974.
He gained national recognition after the House Un-American Activities Committee, of which he was a member, successfully proved that Alger Hiss was a Communist spy.
His many accomplishments, especially in the area of foreign policy, included bringing an end to the Vietnam War, improving relations with the Soviet Union, and becoming the first president to visit the People's Republic of China; he posthumously gained the appreciation of progressives for his many liberal domestic policies.
He was married to Pat Ryan from 1940 to 1993; they had two daughters, Tricia and Julie, together.
He and Bill Clinton forged a close bond during Clinton's first term, to the surprise of many, and Clinton was said to be devastated by his passing.
