About

Acclaimed actor who was part of New York's prestigious Group Theatre collective and appeared in the 1948 version of Joan of Arc. After appearing in Of Mice and Men, he played Pat Derry in The Best Years of Our Lives.

Before Fame

He made his Broadway debut in a 1931 production of as Husbands Go, and two years later was invited to join the Group Theatre, where he appeared in several plays by Clifford Odets.

Trivia

He collapsed from a fatal heart attack during a production of A Distant Isle in 1949 - the same year he was blacklisted by Hollywood.

Family Life

He had a daughter named Marina with his wife, Hilda.

Associated With

He was cast as President Harry Truman in the MGM docu-drama about the atomic bomb titled, The Beginning or the End. The real Truman apparently disliked the portrayal.
