He was the last child born to Henry Ware Eliot and Charlotte Champe Stearns, both of whom were in their mid-forties at the time of their youngest son's birth.
He graduated from Harvard College with a degree in philosophy.
His unhappy marriage to Vivienne Haigh-Wood began in 1915. Following Haigh-Wood's institutionalization and subsequent death, Eliot married Esme Valerie Fletcher.
In his youth, the young T.S. Eliot was a voracious reader of the works of Mark Twain.
