After graduating from the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools he attended the University of Pennsylvania before dropping out.

An anti-racism advocate, he is on the advisory board for the think tank Race Forward and the organization Hollaback!

Family Life

He was born to Walter Bell, an insurance commissioner, and Janet Cheatham, an author. He married Melissa Hudson and the two have two daughters, Sami and Juno.
