American journalist who became a political correspondent for The Washington Post in 1978.
He received his bachelor's and master's degree in communications from the University of Illinois. He served in the US army from 1968 to 1971.
In 2011 he was the recipient of the White House Correspondents' Association's Merriman Smith Award for excellence in presidential coverage.
He and his wife Nancy Johnson Balz have one son.
In 2009 he cowrote the book The Battle for America 2008: The Story of an Extraordinary Election with Haynes Johnson.
