American poet, academic, journalist, and recipient of the 2005 Senior Fulbright Award. Her poetry collections include The Flying House, The Beirut Poems, and Through a Membrane/Clouds.
She studied at San Diego State University, the New College of California, Mills College, and the Sorbonne.
She taught at Lebanese, Egyptian, and French universities during the 1990s.
She married Laurent Baude in Paris. Prior to their 2008 divorce, she and Baude became parents to a son named Alexandre.
She and English writer Julian Barnes can both be classified as postmodernist writers.
