Lyrical Abstract and Abstract Expressionist painter who belonged to the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences. His art crossed multiple media, including oil paintings, gouache, graphic design, ceramics, mosaics, murals, and theatrical set design.
He completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1941. He was involved in the anti-fascist movement during World War II.
He was a member of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights.
He was born in Velika Pisanica, Croatia, to Vinko and Franciska Murtić. The family later relocated to Zagreb.
He and Vincent Van Gogh were fellow painters.
