Twentieth-century poet and editor whose best-known works include The Peaceable Kingdom and The Lens Breakers. He also established and edited a literary magazine called Stand.
He was born into a London family of Jewish immigrants and was sent to Wales during World War II.
He was named for fictional character Jon Forsyte, who appeared in the three, early twentieth-century novels that comprised The Forsyte Saga.
He wed Lorna Tracy in 1974. Before their marriage ended in 1995, he and Tracy became parents to five children.
He was born in the same year as fellow British poet Elaine Feinstein.
