A nineteenth-century Latvian writer and philologist, he is credited with creating close to five hundred Latvian words and phrases. His literary works include DziesmiÅ†as, latviesu valodai partulkotas and Seta, daba, pasaule.
He studied at the University of Dorpat, which was later re-named the University of Tartu.
He was an important member of the Young Latvia movement.
He was born Gustavs Georgs Frīdrihs Alunans; he later adopted the pen name of Juris Alunans.
He and Lorenzo Pena were both philologists.
