He began his journalism career working for the Saskatoon Star Phoenix newspaper in Saskatchewan.

He is the stepfather of Friends actor Matthew Perry. He appeared in an episode of Seinfeld.

He married Suzanne Langford in 1981. They have children named Caitlin, Emily, Willy and Madeleine.
