Before Fame

He attended Harvard University but, after his studies, was not permitted to return to South Africa. He lived in exile in the U.S. until 2001.

He taught literature at several universities, including the University of Wisconsin and the University of California-Irvine.

He was married to Bronwen Ollerenshaw and had two daughter with her. In his later years, he was involved with Astrid Starck.
