She lived an itinerant childhood, moving from Illinois to California, to Louisiana, and finally to Arizona.
After her initial exposure to folk music, she began to record and perform songs, eventually releasing nearly a dozen albums.
She settled in Vermont after meeting her husband John MacArthur.
Sylvia Tyson was also a popular folk singer, but instead of Vermont, Tyson recorded the music of her native Canada.
