French Symbolist poet, author, and literary critic who published Litanies de la rose in 1892. His other works include Les Saintes du paradis and Le Livre des masques.
He was the son of a French Count and Countess who were involved in the publishing business. He studied law in the 1870s before devoting himself to a literary career.
He became disfigured by lupus vulgaris in the 1890s.
He met Berthe Courriere, a sculptor’s model, in the 1880s and remained romantically involved with her for the rest of his life.
His work was translated into English by Ezra Pound.
