Most well known as the Secretary General of Spain's the Socialist Group between 2009 and 2014. He'd previously spent his formative years as a member of the Congress of Deputies.
After earning a bachelor's in contemporary history from University of Deusto, he completed his master's in international relations at the University of the Basque Country. He then began working for the European parliament.
In 2002, he was the target of a terrorist attack where a bomb was attached to the underside of his car. Though he survived the blast, the explosion resulted in the amputation of his left leg at the knee.
He married Paloma Villa in 2006 and the pair had one son, Unax Madina.
During much of his political career, he served under King Juan Carlos I.
