Chinese Wing Chun grandmaster, martial arts teacher, and cultural ambassador known for being the elder son of Ip Man, the legendary Wing Chun master who famously taught Bruce Lee. He is also known for dedicating his life to preserving, teaching, and promoting his father's Wing Chun system around the world.

Before Fame

He pursued a broad education studying Chinese history, philosophy, poetry, music, and Buddhism, and attended university in mainland China. He and his younger brother Ip Ching left mainland China and reunited with their father in Hong Kong during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. He began formal and consistent training under his father Ip Man in Hong Kong while working day jobs including roles in accounting and journalism. He began assisting with organizational efforts in 1965 that led to the founding of the Ving Tsun Athletic Association in 1968. He began formally teaching Wing Chun in 1967.

Trivia

He co-authored the book 116 Wing Tsun Dummy Techniques in 1981. He served as a consultant for the 2008 film Ip Man and made special appearances in projects such as The Legend Is Born: Ip Man. He received an Honorary Fellowship from Lingnan University in 2020.

Family Life

He was born in Foshan, Guangdong, China. He was born into a family deeply rooted in Chinese martial arts and culture. His father Ip Ma was an accomplished Wing Chun practitioner. He was the older brother of fellow Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Ching. He had two sons named Ip Kong-chiu and Ip Kong-kin. He died on January 1st, 2021, at 96 years old.
