Nonfiction author, editor, and food and travel journalist known for being the editorial director of Christopher Kimball's Milk Street, being the former national food editor of The Associated Press, and for being the author of multiple books including shake Strain Done, Pour Me Another, Beating the Lunch Box Blues, and High Flavor, Low Labor.

Before Fame

He studied philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and graduated in 1994. He then built a career in newspapers and The Associated Press, where he eventually rose to national food editor, where he led AP's food coverage and contributed to the popular food chapter of the AP Stylebook. He released his first book High Flavor, Low Labor: Reinventing Weeknight Cooking in September 2010.

Trivia

His Pour Me Another book is structured like a choose-your-own-adventure for cocktails. He won the 2018 James Beard Award for Dining & Travel for his 2017 article "In Pursuit of Perfect Hummus." He won the IACP Food Writing award for Culinary Travel Writing with Recipes in 2024 for his Milk Street feature "As War Triggers a Culinary Awakening, Ukrainians Rediscover Their Own Cuisine."

He married his husband Calton Hill in 2019, and the pair own several cats together.
