American operatic tenor known for his singing of pieces by Wagner. In 1963, he joined the cast of the Metropolitan Opera and sang in 109 performances.
He studied psychology at the University of Nebraska, and worked as a high school guidance counselor.
He made his opera debut in 1957 for the San Francisco Opera, performing in Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.
He was born and raised in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
