He took piano lessons at a young age. He attended the Chicago Musical College and was commissioned by future film producer Mike Todd to write a song for a Todd-created musical act.

He wrote the scores for such musicals as High Button Shoes, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Peter Pan, Gypsy, Funny Girl, and Hallelujah, Baby!, which won a Tony. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972 and the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981.
