He was buying groceries for his mother when he got distracted by a parade; after following the parade's drummer through the route for hours, he was inspired to learn music.
He teamed up with Charlie Byrd to perform regularly at the Showboat Lounge in Washington, DC and later toured abroad with him in concerts sponsored by the State Department.
He was born William Thomas Betts in Port Chester, New York and was raised by a single mother.
