He is known for making history during his 2024-25 NHL rookie season by scoring 66 points and posting 60 assists and tying the all-time NHL rookie assist record for defensemen.

Before Fame

He played high school hockey for Stevenson High School before being selected to join the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in 2020 which was the official start of his elite-level career. He committed to Boston University in 2022 where he became one of the most decorated defensemen in NCAA history. He was selected 62nd overall in the 2nd round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He signed with and debuted for the Montreal Canadiens in 2024.

Trivia

He won the 2025 Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's Rookie of the Year and became one of the youngest defensemen ever to claim the award. He won the E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence in 2022. He tied Larry Murphy's 1980-81 rookie defenseman assist record with 60 helpers in his first NHL season.

He grew up in North Barrington, Illinois, after being born in Michigan. He holds dual US-Canadian citizenship since his father is from Manitoba, Canada. His parents are Rob Hutson and Julie Hutson. He has three brothers named Quinn, Cole, and Lars.
