Founder of the French Saxophone School and one of the most influential saxophonists to ever live. He founded many ensembles, including the Quatuor de la Garde Républicaine.
He started playing saxophone at the age of eight and went on to teach before being drafted during World War I.
He did a twelve concert tour in 1958 in the United States, which helped him gain notoriety abroad.
He grew up in Aube, France, taught music by his father.
He transcribed music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for his saxophone quartet.
