Famous as the father of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and as the grandfather of pop sensation Miley Cyrus, he is also remembered as an eleven-term, Democratic Party member of the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Before beginning his political career, he served in Japan with the United States Air Force.
During the mid 1980s, he held an executive position with the Kentucky branch of the AFL-CIO.
A native of Flatwoods, Kentucky, he was born to Eldon Lindsey Cyrus and Verlina Adeline Hay. His marriage to Ruth Ann Casto resulted in four children: Billy Ray, Kevin, Cherie, and Angie Marie Cyrus.
His famous granddaughter, Miley Cyrus, dedicated her 2007 track "I Miss You" to him.
