He worked as an agriculturist and businessman before entering politics and built local influence through his involvement in farming and water supply services. He was initially associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party before switching to the NCP ahead of the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election which was a move that played a significant role in his political breakthrough resulting in him winning the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly election.

He is also known for achieving one of the largest victory margins in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections by winning by over 108,000 votes. He was a producer for the biographical film Satyashodhak in 2024, which is a film based on the lives of social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule.

He was born and raised in the Maval-Talegaon Dabhade region of Pune district, Maharashtra, India. He is the son of Shankarrao Bajirao Shelke. He married Sarika Shelke and they have two children together.
