She is an emigrant from India having moved to the United States with her family in 1993 and settled in Michigan. She graduated from Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids before moving on to matriculate at Michigan State University. She would then go on to Law School where she would discover her love of Intellectual Property law as an extern for the US Patent Office.

She is very close with her parents, who are both physicians, and her sister who followed in her parents' footsteps. They all still reside in the Midwest. She is married and has a German Shepard.
