Before fame

She rose to prominence as an op-ed editor and writer for The Wall Street Journal (2013-2017) and The New York Times (2017-2020) before famously resigning from the latter, citing an "illiberal" work environment. In 2021, she founded the independent media company The Free Press (originally Common Sense), which grew into a massive success on Substack before being acquired by Paramount Global.

Family life

Originally from the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She comes from a prominent Jewish family; her parents are Lou Weiss and Amy Weiss, and her great-grandfather was the flyweight boxer Philip "Chappy" Goldstein. She has been married to fellow journalist Nellie Bowles since 2021, and the couple has two children.
