Jazz artist known as sideman for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers from 1958 until 1961.
He became famous for composing Moanin', Dat Dere, and This Here. They each displayed his trademark gospel soul-jazz approach.
He made his recording debut with Kenny Dorham in a May 1956 live set.
His life was cut short at age 38 from cirrhosis.
