Surface pattern designer, educator, entrepreneur, and Instagram personality known for turning botanical illustrations into licensed fabric designs and for teaching thousands of students how to build careers in surface pattern design. She is also known for projects such as Surface Pattern Design Immersion, Pattern+, Pattern Magazine, The Professional Creative podcast, and fabric collections including Gathered, Hello, Ollie, Hello, Bear, Her & History, and A Year in Petals.

Before fame

She was introduced to fabric and sewing at a young age through her mother's quilt shop. She attended business school before deciding to pursue her passion for design and art. She began teaching herself surface pattern design from scratch in 2009 which is also the year she began blogging. She spent months learning design software and developing her skills before eventually creating her first repeating pattern after about 11 months of consistent practice. She built her first portfolio and began pursuing licensing opportunities. She established herself as a professional designer working with fabric companies such as Art Gallery Fabrics which helped launch her career in the textile and licensing industry. She began sharing content online on Instagram in the mid-2010s. She launched Surface Pattern Design Immersion in 2018. She started The Professional Creative podcast in 2022.

Trivia

She is also known for launching Pattern+ which is a membership platform that provides ongoing education and resources for surface pattern designers. Her Pattern Magazine started selling in Barnes and Noble in 2025.

Family life

She grew up in the mountains of North Carolina. She has two children with her husband David. Her family and home life often inspire her artwork including the fabric collection Hello, Ollie, which was named after her daughter.
