Known for a hard, moving fastball and good slider, he made his MLB debut in 2012 with the Tampa Bay Rays and finished second in the 2013 Rookie of the Year voting.
He played baseball at Clayton High School in North Carolina.
Before reaching the majors, he played for the minor leagues systems of the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs.
He was raised by his grandparents, Donna and Ron Archer.
He was BJ Upton's teammate on the Rays in 2012.
