Early in his career, he was associated with FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
He was raised in Vernon, Alabama. In his mid-twenties, he relocated to Memphis, Tennessee to further his music career. He later settled in Nashville.
His song "You Left the Water Running" became a 1966 hit for R&B singer Barbara Lynn.
