Brazilian politician and public figure known for serving as the Mayor of Manaus, the capital city of the state of Amazonas, Brazil, and for his long career in regional politics including roles as President of the Amazonas Legislative Assembly and interim Governor of Amazonas. He became better known after winning the Manaus mayoral election in 2020 and for being reelected in 2024.

Before fame

He earned a law degree from the Universidade Luterana de Manaus. He began his political career in the mid-2000s. He was first elected as a state deputy in 2006 and officially took office in 2007 as a member of the Amazonas Legislative Assembly. He went on to win reelection in 2010 and 2014 and served three consecutive terms as a state deputy. He served as President of the Amazonas Legislative Assembly during the 2017-2018 legislative term. He became interim Governor of Amazonas in 2017. He returned to local politics and ran for mayor of Manaus and won the 2020 mayoral election after a second-round runoff and officially took office in January 2021. He was reelected as Mayor of Manaus in 2024.

Trivia

He is one of the few politicians in Amazonas history to have served in all three major branches of state level leadership. He is among the few Manaus mayors to win reelection in the first attempt under Brazil's two term mayoral system. He is also known his Instagram account under the handle @davidalmeidaam where he shares updates related to city governance, public works, and community events with over 350,000 followers.

Family life

He was born and raised in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil and grew up in a working-class neighborhood. He was born to Rosa Almeida and Benedito Almeida. He married Izabelle Fontenelle Queiroz de Almeida in October 2024. He is a father and grandfather. He had a son named David Benedito Almeida who passed away at only 20 days old in January 2026.
