First African American mayor of New York City. After leaving office in 1993, he became a Professor of Public Affairs at Columbia University.
He served in the Marine Corps before graduating cum laude from Howard University with a degree in mathematics.
He signed a deal with the USTA National Tennis Center that brought the U.S. Open to New York City.
He married Joyce Dinkins; the couple raised two children.
He and Michael Bloomberg both held office as Mayor of New York City.
