His last words before his execution, "let's do it," have become famous in popular culture. Dan Wieden, who came up with Nike's "Let's Do It" slogan, claims that Gilmore inspired the slogan.

His father was a con man who, along with Gary's mother, lived under the fake name Coffman to avoid the law at the time of his birth.
