Best known as the younger sister of United States President Jimmy Carter.
She briefly studied journalism at Georgia Southwestern College.
She died of pancreatic cancer, a disease that had also killed her brother Billy, her sister Ruth, and both of her parents.
Her first marriage, to an abusive war veteran named William Everett Hardy, resulted in her only child, a son named William Everett Hardy. She later married a Georgia-born farmer named Walter Guy Spann; the couple's marriage lasted from 1950 until her death in 2012.
Her brother Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, served as the United States' thirty-ninth president and was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
