Before Fame
Prior to his political career, he was involved in sailing and competed in major yacht races including the Whitbread Round the World Race early in his career. He also built his entrepreneurial career around sports and entertainment ventures before focusing on politics fulltime.
Trivia
He was the owner and chairman of the Helsinki ice-hockey club Jokerit. He was also involved in the Hartwall Arena project, a development venture for the team's stadium. At the beginning of 2018, he became a vegetarian.
Family Life
He is the son of cinematographer Osmo Harkimo, who passed in 2007. He married politician and businesswoman Leena Harkimo in 1989, and they welcomed two children together before their divorce in 2002. In 2004, he married fellow member of the Finnish Parliament, Merikukka Forsius-Harkimo; however, the marriage lasted only one year.
