American poet known for Views of Jeopardy, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poetry collection. His other award-winning works include Monolithos, Refusing Heaven, and The Dance Most of All.
He attended both the University of Pittsburgh and San Francisco State University.
He worked in his youth as an exterminator, salesman, and steelworker in his native Pennsylvania.
He and Gerald Stern were classmates and fellow literature students at the University of Pittsburgh.
