She was born and raised in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She moved to the Los Angeles area during high school. She has an older sister. She married Sergey Skliarenko in September 1997, but they eventually divorced. She was in a relationship with Michael Pitt from 2004 to 2014. She dated photographer Sofia Malamute from 2014 to 2016
