Cleric in the Church of England and the author of The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living for which he was compared to Shakespeare for his poetic expression.
He studied at Perse School and Gonville and Caius College.
He became the Bishop of Down and Connor, and was made the vice-chancellor of the University of Dublin.
He had six children with wife Phoebe Langsdale. After her death, he married Joanna Bridges, with whom he had two daughters.
His readings became well known during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell.
