Lyricist and composer who collaborated on the musicals The Pajama Game and Damn Yankees with Richard Adler.
He attended New York University under the tutelage of Rudolph Schramm. He and Adler met in 1950 and both became protégés of the legendary Frank Loesser.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1982.
His birth name was Jerold Rosenberg, and he was born to Russian immigrants Lena and Jacob Rosenberg. He sang and acted in Yiddish theater growing up where he was known as the Boy Star.
He co-wrote the song Rags to Riches, which was a 1953 hit for Tony Bennett.
