Famous for winning the Australian Derby twice in the early 1990s and once in the first decade of the 21st century, this skilled New Zealand jockey was also, by 1997, a two time Melbourne Cup champion.
He began his horse racing career in the late 1970s and, in 1983, won his first Melbourne Cup while riding a horse named Kiwi.
In late 2013, he won his one hundredth horse race atop Zoustar at the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
His first marriage resulted in two daughters. With his second wife, Vicki, he raised a third daughter.
He and fellow jockey Shane Dye both rose to fame on racetracks in New Zealand and Australia.
