Fifth Khagan of the Mongol Empire and founder of China's Yuan Dynasty and became the first Yuan ruler of the whole of China.
He became fascinated with Chinese culture in his youth and studied with a Buddhist monk and a Chinese poet. His father passed away at the age of 17, leaving his grandfather to raise him.
He helped to establish trade routes between Asia and Europe.
He was the grandson of Genghis Khan.
Khan's garden at Xanadu (in Mongolia) became the subject of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's famous poem "Kubla Khan."
