A Twentieth-century American author, she is best known for her Betsy-Tacy children's book series. The series is unique in that the degree of reading difficulty progresses as the characters age throughout the series.
A voracious reader, she started writing during her early childhood years. She briefly attended the University of Minnesota and had her first story published by the Los Angeles Times Magazine.
Her Betsy-Tacy series grew out of her stories to her daughter, Merian.
She and her two siblings were born in Mankato, Minnesota to Thomas and Stella Hart. She married Delos Lovelace in 1917.
Pauline Clark was another popular children's book author (she wrote the award-winning story, The Twelve and the Genii).
