He won a national prize for painting at age 17; shortly thereafter, he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Porto.
He published several books detailing his theory of geometry-based aesthetics.
He grew up in Portugal and was the son of poet Artur Maria Afonso.
He admired the work of Salvador Dali.
