Art critic and academic lecturer most famous for her work with The New York Times, for which she became the co-chief art critic in 2011. She is the recipient of numerous prestigious prizes, including the Frank Jewett Mather Award for Art Criticism.
She grew up in Lawrence, Kansas and attended Grinnell College in Iowa. She returned to her birthplace of New York City in the early 70s.
She is the first female to hold the position of co-chief art critic for The New York Times.
She married fellow art critic Jerry Saltz in 1992.
She became friendly with sculptor Donald Judd during her college days.
