Before Fame

He learned violin during his childhood but after breaking his bowing arm, he switched to clarinet, and at fifteen, he picked up the saxophone.

Trivia

His 1918 signature hit "Saxophobia" inspired a new generation of jazz sound that unfortunately Weidoeft himself could not keep up with.

He was born in Detroit, Michigan, the son of German immigrants.

Associated With

Hubert Vallee, another aspiring saxophonist, was so awed by Wiedoeft's playing that he changed his first name to Rudy, becoming Rudy Vallee.
