During the 1650s and early 1660s, he represented Norwalk as a member of the Connecticut Colony's General Court. He was also a founder of Hartford and Norwalk, Connecticut.
He fought in the Pequot War of the 1630s.
In 1647, he served on a legislative assembly in the town of Wethersfield, Connecticut.
He was born and raised in Hertford, England. After moving to America, he married a woman named Mary Smith.
He and Thomas Hooker were both early settlers of Connecticut.
