In 2012, he became the coach of Texas Christian University's Horned Frogs Division I basketball team. Previously, he had served as head basketball coach at Louisiana State University, Stanford University, and the University of Nevada, Reno.
He played his college basketball career at Boise State University and, in 1983, earned an undergraduate degree in physical education.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, he held assistant coach positions at the University of Utah, the University of Washington, and Rice University.
Though a native of Berkeley, California, he attended high school in Seattle, Washington.
He and fellow college basketball coach Tubby Smith both coached Southeastern Conference (SEC) tournament-winning teams.
