About

Japanese national who garnered infamy for having escaped from prison four different times. He would go on to became an anti-hero figurehead. He has a memorial at the Abashiri Prison Museum.

Before Fame

He worked in a tofu shop and later as a fisherman. After being falsely accused of robbery and murder he was sent to Aomori prison in 1936.

Trivia

He escaped through a cold cracked skylight during his first incarceration. He was later sentenced to death by the Sapporo District Court. A character from the manga Golden Kamuy was based on his exploits. After the court overturned the murder sentence he was given, Shiratori was instead sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was released early on good behavior.

His wife passed away while he was in prison.
