Spanish painter, sculptor and muralist best known for "The Tilled Field," "The Farm," and other surrealist works.
His first solo exhibition, at the Dalmau Gallery in 1918, made him the object of much ridicule.
His work paved the way for American abstract expressionist artists such as Rothko and Pollock.
He married Pilar Juncosa 1929; their daughter, Dolores, was born two years later.
He and Salvador Dali were both surrealist artists.
