He attended college in both Illinois and New York. He debuted on Broadway in a 1961 production of The Conquering Hero.

In 1960, he was honored with a Theatre World Award for his role as Corporate Billy Jester in the 1959 off-Broadway musical Little Mary Sunshine.

He married Cynthia Baer in 1960; the couple divorced in 1971.
