Abdul Sattar Edhi

About

Humanitarian and philanthropist known as one of Pakistan's most respected figures. He founded the Edhi Foundation, which runs the world's largest volunteer ambulance network. It also runs homeless shelters, animal shelters and orphanages.

Before Fame

When he was 11, his mother became paralyzed and suffered mental illness. He devoted himself to caring for her.

Trivia

He was nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He received awards including the Gandhi Peace Award.

Family Life

His wife was Bilquis Bano Edhi. They had two daughters and two sons. After his death, his son Faisal Edhi took over as head of the Edhi Foundation.

Associated With

After his death, then-Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif said "We have lost a great servant of humanity. He was the real manifestation of love for those who were socially vulnerable, impoverished, helpless, and poor."
